SEBI's expiry rationalization gives each exchange a single weekly expiry weekday across its own index products, and limits weekly contracts to one benchmark index per exchange — the rest trade monthly. Exchanges have moved these weekdays more than once by circular, so treat this as the current convention and check the contract note for the series you are actually trading.

SEBI's rationalization of derivatives expiries requires each exchange to run only one weekly options expiry day across its own index products, rather than staggering a different weekday per index the way NSE and BSE both used to. NSE currently runs its weekly index options expiry on Tuesday; BSE (Sensex, Bankex) runs its on Thursday.

Exchanges have changed this weekday assignment more than once by circular, so treat the day named here as the current convention, not a permanent fact — the exchange's own contract notes for the series you're actually trading are the authoritative source in the moment.

Example: a holiday falling on the usual expiry day typically moves that week's expiry to the previous trading session rather than skipping it entirely — a detail that matters most for anyone holding a position they're expecting to expire on a specific date.

Frequently asked

Which day is NIFTY weekly expiry?

NSE currently runs its weekly index options expiry on Tuesday. If a trading holiday falls on that Tuesday, the expiry typically moves to the previous trading session rather than being skipped.

When is Bank Nifty weekly expiry?

BANK NIFTY no longer has its own weekly options contract. Under SEBI's expiry rationalization each exchange offers weekly options on one benchmark index only — NIFTY 50 on NSE — so BANK NIFTY now trades monthly contracts, expiring on the last Tuesday of the month.

What day is BSE Sensex weekly expiry?

BSE runs its weekly index options expiry on Thursday, covering Sensex. Bankex, as the non-benchmark BSE index, trades monthly contracts expiring on the last Thursday of the month.

What happens if expiry day is a market holiday?

The expiry moves to the previous trading session rather than being skipped or pushed forward. That matters most for anyone holding a position they expect to settle on a specific date — the contract expires a day early, not a day late.
